COWBOY ACTION
Every month, we rotate in groups through 4-5 scenarios utilizing our firearms in different orders. Occasionally, reloading is required to complete a scenario. On range, eye & ear protection is required at all times by both participants & observers.
After everyone fills out the required paperwork (8:30), we have a meeting at 8:45 to explain the scenario designs and break into groups, with spotters and designated range officers in charge. By 9:00, we start shooting. You will move through each scenario with your group until you finish all the stages.
Please bring a method of hauling your equipment from stage to stage so no guns are lying around.
WHAT TO BRING
- Eye protection
- Ear protection
- Western Style Holster, period correct clothing (do your best)
- 2 Single-Action Revolvers are needed, .32-.45 long colt calibers
- Pistol Caliber Rifle, .32-.45 long colt calibers
- Shotgun must be 12-20 gauge double-barrel side-by-side or hammer pump or lever action shotgun (for children or handicapped, .22 calibers and a 410 shotgun is permitted)
No magnum loads. Lead ammo only.
Wild Bunch Shooters – 45acp 1911’s. 3 mags are needed.
Ammo needed per event: at least 50 pistol & 50 rifle cartridges, at least one box shotgun shells (light loads only)
Mark’s Note: This event changes from month to month; please come prepared for variation. There are many reasons you might need more ammo. I personally always bring twice as much ammo as I need.

Shooting starts: 9:00 a.m.
Duration: 3-4 hours
Cost $5 per shooter
SCORING
For each missed target, you add 5 seconds to your time; if you run out of ammo, then you’re done shooting for that stage.
Your overall score is the average of all of your stages combined.

Hi, my name is Mark Shingler. I grew up around firearms and hunting and have been doing it my whole life. For over 20 years, I’ve been competing in Cowboy Action, and 2 years ago I began running this event. I enjoy using some of the older firearms, meaning single-action Western style shooting, which I grew up doing with my dad.
Cowboy Action tests your ability to handle multiple firearms at different targets in quick succession. Whichever is your weak link, it’s going to affect your overall score. Some clubs are very strict about shooting sequences, but if you make a mistake, we aren’t going to penalize you for little errors. Here, it’s more about having fun, doing your best, and learning. You can practice without pressure.
From my perspective, Cowboy Action has the best of both worlds – you can be highly competitive, or just show up to have fun. Shooting has always been a highlight in my life, and I enjoy our lighthearted, easygoing camaraderie. If you are new, there are always people ready to help you out, so come join us!
